EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State women's soccer team defeated Wisconsin, 2-1, in a Big Ten match on Sunday (Sept. 28) at Old College Field. The Spartans improve to 7-2 (3-1 Big Ten) on the season as Wisconsin falls to 5-5-1 (1-3)with the lost. All three goals were scored in a six-minute span early in the second half.

The game got off to a slow start in the first half while both teams were waiting for the rain to start. Wisconsin attempted seven shots and Michigan State only attempted three in a scoreless first half. After raining the entire halftime, both teams came back eager to score.

In the second half, senior Andrea Sied (Livonia) scored the first goal for the Spartans off a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Badger goalkeeper Kristen Sondermanoff recieved a red card for the penalty and substituted out with Stefani Szczechowski. Badger Katy Lindenmuth scored off a header at 50:41 with an assist from Marla Froelich. In the 54th minute, Spartan Tiffany Laskowski (Sr., Troy) scored her team-best fifth goal of the season with assists from sophomore Emma Harris (Portage) and junior Ashley Lawson (Burlington, Ont.).

Spartan goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Sr., Madison, Wis.) finished the game with nine saves.

"Every Big Ten game is so tough this season," said head coach Tom Saxton. "I truly believe we can challenge for the Big Ten title because our players are focused . To compete for the championship, which is very difficult in our league, we know we have to win at home."

"We really wanted Wisconsin," said Tiffany Laskowski. "We are truly trying to step it up in the Big Ten games, but our main reason for wanting to beat Wisconsin was for our goalie Stacy."
